Fellowship Program

The Fellowship program is a two-year teacher development program for the most promising individuals, to serve as full-time teachers to children from underserved communities in some of the nation’s most under-resourced schools. Through this experience of teaching in classrooms and working with key education stakeholders like students, principals and parents, our Fellows get exposed to the grassroots realities of Botswana’s education system and begin to cultivate the knowledge, skills, and mind-sets necessary to attain positions of leadership in education and identify their role in building a wider movement for educational equity in the country. We believe that teaching successfully in low-income communities is one of the most vital and challenging jobs in the country.

Objectives of the Program

The aim of our program is to provide equal opportunities in access to high-quality education. Like every change, this one begins with a small group of enthusiasts – fellows , who want to change the system from the inside. Thanks to their work at school, they can actually make these changes. With each subsequent edition, more and more young and inspiring people will change the face of public education. Step by step, school after school and community after community - thus unleashing the super powers of millions of children!

SUMMER INSTITUTE

The fellowship is preceded by an intense four-week Summer Institute training program that is designed to first help fellows understand the enormity of educational inequity and second build the necessary skills that are needed to tackle it. These necessary skills of learning will be focused on important concepts including culturally relevant pedagogy, universal design for learning, social emotional learning and teaching with technology. Fellows will engage in continuous self-reflection and immediately put the lessons learnt into action. A classroom teaching practicum will be conducted where fellows will get direct feedback and coaching to build their foundational teaching skills.

2 YEAR PROGRAM

Once in the classroom, Fellows will ensure every student's imagination, creativity, and sense of self-worth is recognized and nurtured. Within the school environment, Fellows will be supported and equipped to work collaboratively with the school by exploring ideas, implementing new pedagogical approaches and integrating digital tools as they seek to engage students fully in the learning process. Outside the classroom, Fellows will be ambassadors/leaders in their school communities – advocating for students, parents and other local stakeholders to improve access to high-quality instruction. Strategic partners (corporates, NGOs) will be fully involved in this school community investment process, providing mentorship and experiential learning opportunities

CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS

Every month during the fellowship program there are workshops and seminars organized (virtually and in-person in your placement region) that are designed to help fellows strengthen their practice and effectiveness as a teacher and a leader over the course of their two year commitment.

ALUMNI

After the two-year Fellowship, our Alumni will use their experience to continue tackling Teach For Botswana's most pressing problems in education and continue raising the torch for lifelong commitment in improving education and educational opportunities for marginalized children of society.
